Kids Can Learn Values by Reading
You can teach values through reading with your child. children illustration books are great ways to start. These books tell stories that a young child can understand and through the plot and theme values are represented. It's easy to see that children will ask many questions and they can relate asking to someone who is a mentor or some who is wiser then them like Abel. He can put himself in the place of the young character. It is a good way for him or her to learn about values like wisdom, right, and wrong.
The book can help your child learn values easier as they are demonstrated through the good and bad actions of a book’s characters. Older characters tend to show young character the answer, as well as explains the thing the younger character is pondering. This is the case in a picture book entitled “The Greedy Race Car Driver” by Mike Campana. It is part of his series Destination Station. In this kids book Abel has heard the word greed and doesn’t know what it means. His friend Wise Wally finds him pondering this question and tells Abel he will show him what greed is.
Wise Wally takes Abel to a cave to let him see greed in action. The story is made more vivid by the inclusion of an original wooden racecar project. Project books like this that come with a to really fascinate children. This series can help you teach values through reading to your boy or girl as each picture book relates a different value. In “The Greedy Race Car Driver” the young character learns how being greedy is not good and how sharing can be fun.
This book is written in the tradition of a value or moral being learned from a story. A great example would be how Pinocchio nose grew when he lied or when Peter called wolf. Many fables have been written that deal with values. It is a good way to illustrate that kindness is better than meanness or that sharing is better than being stingy. The story is set in Colorado where that author is from and the nice illustrations will help to keep your child interested in what Abel learns from Wise Wally.
This picture book has the added value of making the unique wooden racecar with your child. You have the chance to encourage your boy or girl to share this unusual toy with siblings or friends. This added feature of books with toys helps you to teach your child values. Not only will your child love the wooden race car that comes with the book, this will also give you something different and fun. From more information on this book check out the Mike Campana site.
Good Samaritans Descend on Midwestern Kmarts, Pay Off Layaway Balances (New York Magazine)
Christmas-slash-Hannukah-slash-generic-holidy-season is nearly here but with
the economy still ambling along a lot of people just can't afford to buy their
kid that one toy certain to turn them into a little ball of shrieking joy.
Hence the increasing number of ads in recent weeks from big box retailers that
you can get whatever little Johnny wants and pay for it bit by bit. The catch:
you can only pick up the item once it's all paid for, and with the big day
just a week away some hard-up parents may be wondering if they'll have to give
their kids an IOU. But there's hope still! A small but growing group of people
from Michigan to Iowa to Indiana have been showing up at Kmarts (and the odd
Wal-Mart) to spread around the holiday cheer and, in one woman's case, her
recently deceased husband's life insurance, by paying off strangers' layaway
balances. It's like _Pay It Forward: The Christmas Edition -- _now if only the
East and West Coasts could get onboard.
