A Basic Overview of Guitar Hardware

If you are new to the electric guitar, probabilities are the majority of the electronics and elements are a complete mystery to you. Let's be honest you are probably finding learning how to play the guitar is enough of a serious challenge , however it can be useful to gain a clearer understanding of the way in which the guitar produces sound and ways in which you can essentially improve on the tone of an inexpensive electric guitar.

Pickups

We'll start with your guitar's pickups. If you play guitar here is where the bulk of your sound will come from. If you make a decision to customize your guitar this is likely where you will start as most cheap starter electric guitar kits only come with starter level pickups. Pickups come in numerous different types but to provide just a bare bones approach to this "pickups are available as either single coil or humbucker.

Single coil is essentially known for clean bluesy tones and are typically thought of with Stratocaster style guitars (some renowned Stratocaster players include Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix while Humbuckers have mostly been employed for rock and heavier sounding guitar tones and are often linked with the Gibson Les Paul (Slash, Jimmy Page, Gary Moore etc.) There are also stacked Humbucker pickups, Active pickups and the list keeps growing.

Selector Switches
Selector switches select which pickup is being employed. These frequently come in 3 or 5 way selector switches allowing different combinations of pickups to be in action at once. The most important reason for this is to permit a guitar tonal variety.

Volume and Tone Pots (Potentiometers)
Next we have Volume and Tone Potentiometers (more widely known as pots) another area you'll think about customising to get better control as again much like tuning pegs having better control will allow more accuracy with your specific tone.

Input Jack
Lastly you have got the input jack to connect the lead which is pretty self-explanatory.

If as an example you are building a guitar employing a guitar kit the majority of these components will come pre-wired however you can consider handling the wiring yourself after you have a better understanding of guitar hardware to offer you even greater control of your tone. Put it all together and you've got your standard electric guitar.

Steven Dean writes about electric guitars at www.eguitarkits.com the web's best resource for electric guitar kits the website covers all aspects of electric guitar kits including correct setup and reducing fret buzz.
