Cat Health Care Helpful Hints
Dirty cats aren’t anyone’s friend, so it is important that you look after your pet and ensure that cat health care is top of the agenda. Keep your pet healthy and happy with regular grooming sessions to ensure its fur is clean. Brush your cat’s hair in order to prevent hairballs and keep up with regular grooming. To prevent hairballs, brush the fur regularly as this will remove loose hair. There are some cats that find hairballs hard to remove. If you cat can’t get the hairball out then you may find it results in intestinal problems such as a blockage. Some blockages can reach danger levels and this could pose a health risk to your pet, so be sure to monitor the severity and get your pet seen by a vet.
If you cat has long hair, you will need to brush this daily to keep on top of your cat health care routine; for short haired cats this can be stretched to weekly. Skin irritations can be quite common, so be aware of these when brushing and grooming your cat. Always start brushing along the cat’s back and move the comb from the head to the tail to optimise the grooming process. Be sure to follow this rule and brush a few times on one side, then switch over to the other side. Brush or gently comb your cat’s hair in the direction that the hair grows, so that you can keep it looking glossy and not pull too hard on its fur.
Some pet owners often make the mistake of brushing the face and paws of their cat, but it is important that you do not do this. Does your cat have a slight aversion to brushing? If so, there is another tool you can use. Many cats have been found to love the soft and relaxing sensation of the grooming glove, and this of course makes it easier for pet owners to proceed with grooming in a quick and easy way. Help make the grooming process a much smoother one by getting your cat used to it from an early age, be it with the grooming glove or a brush. You can help make your cat health care routine a success by introducing them to grooming when they are young, and many cats end up looking forward to their little grooming session as part of their day to day activities.
Be sure to check your cat properly when brushing, so that you can identify any abnormalities in the eyes or claws, for example. Hopefully your cat’s eyes will look fine, but as a pet owner you should be able to notice if something isn’t quite right, so check them over to see if he responds to your voice and movement. Check the colour of the inner ears on your cat to ensure they are pink and look perfectly clean, as this will prevent the chance of ear mites. As nearly every animal is prone to some form of dirt build up, the ear is one place that you want to try and make sure it is avoided, because if untreated it can cause ear shrivelling and hearing loss. Once ear mites find their way in there, they can be a nuisance to get rid of and cause you and your pet a great deal of hardship. Quite simply, keep your cat’s ears clean and healthy and you will stand a much better chance of reducing the risk of infections as a result of dirt build up.
Use your cat grooming time to explore your cat and feel for lumps and bumps, so that you can identify small problems before they get much worse. Give your cat a tasty treat if he remains perfectly still for you when grooming, as this will show him that he gets a worthy reward next time too. Animals can have little moods, just like people, so if you’re finding that your cat isn’t willing to co-operate with your planned grooming session, the best idea is to leave it a while and try again later. As a pet owner, you can easily make your cat health care routine a resounding success when your cat has come round to the idea of being brushed – it may just take a little time.
