Five Pet Photography Tips For Great Pictures
Getting a great picture of your pet can be challenging which is why some studios specialize in just pets. Sometimes it can feel like getting a good picture of your pet is completely dependent upon luck, however that's not necessarily true. So, here are five tips that you can use that will almost guarantee that you get great pictures of your pets.
Capture Their Fun
Unfortunately, our pets are only with us for a limited period of time. This is why it's so important that you capture pictures of them having fun in the prime of their life. If your dog loves to fetch, have someone throw a ball while you shoot and get some shots of him doing what he does best. Or, if your cat loves playing with toilet paper in the bathroom, catch a picture of him or her in the act as often our fondest memories of them are them playing. Never forget that if a picture is worth a thousand words, each photo you take should essentially be a short story. And remember to display your pet photos with pride in pet frames or even adorable heart picture frames.
Spy on Them
This may sound devious, but some of the best animal photography in the world is of animals that don’t know the photographer is there. Simply capturing your pet in its natural environment just being a dog or cat is a great way to document their life and will often yield timeless and beautiful work. Plus, just getting your cat or dog sleeping won't do justice when it comes to telling their story.
Get Their Attention
If you really want to get a great picture of your pet, you're going to need to reward them for paying attention. Make sure you come equipped with lots of treats otherwise they'll likely lose interest really fast. Treats can come in handy for both getting your pets attention to look the right direction but will also serve as a nice reward.
Take Their View
One of the major missteps many photographers make when shooting their pets is forgetting to get down to the animal’s perspective. Kneeling (or laying) down to get the best angle on your pet is a great way to help them naturally fill out the photo frame, and will also more accurately represent their appearance. Perspective is also fun to toy around with – try getting a ground-level view of your small animal and watch as they become gigantic in the photograph.
Be Patient
Above all else, you need lots of patience when it comes to taking great pictures of your pets. As previously stated, your pet probably doesn’t know what you’re trying to accomplish or why, so staying positive and energetic will go a long way in helping with their participation. Cats and dogs are highly sensitive to your emotions so if you begin to grow anxious and frustrated so will they. If you find yourself running out of steam, break off the photo session and try it again the next day.
Pets are an important part of our lives, and having a record of who they were and what they meant to us is incredibly valuable. That's why you should always frame your pet photos in either cute cat picture frames or adorable dog picture frames. If you can apply patience and enthusiasm to taking pictures of your pets, you'll be happily surprised at your results.
Am I the penultimate pet sleeping partner or something?
I know the dogs in my family and in my own home after I moved out have always slept in the same bed as me. Try to get them to stay somewhere else when I am sleeping and they will go crazy trying to get to me. I don't really mind, but everytime I sleep over at a buddies house and they have a pooch of their own, guess who's bed is getting crashed? Bingo.
Do I put off a vibe or smell or something?
Once again, I don't mind the pooches sleeping with me, they make good feet warmers in the winter afterall, but am more confused as to why they like me for snoozing so much.
Dogs have good taste. They take to some people naturally. I have the same problem with most animals. Enjoy it.
