Generation of Home Wind Power for Today
>The renewable energy resources available to the inhabitants of this planet are incredible if combined with the use of wind power generators. The windmill uses the energy held within the movement of molecules in the air to provide movement of stones and pumps for the pioneers to grind grain power sawmills and pump water.
Today the same basic concept is being used to generate electricity. The wind turbine consists of basically three parts. The first and most obvious is the bat made up of the blades. This is collection of blades held together in whatever configuration is preferred and is called the rotor. Behind the rotor, you’ll find the parts that actually convert power generated by the movement of the blades into electrical energy.
Generators produce electricity similarly, regardless if the generator works via wind, heat, or water. Only the energy source required to turn or rotate the blades is different.
The final and most important part is the structural support. This could be a single pole, a traditional four sided tower or even in some amazing new technology, a tether to hold down a light than air generator. How one positions the support and the rotor and generator is the vital component to devising an effective wind power system for home use.
The wind must be able to reach your rotor at sufficient speed to cause movement at a minimum speed to turn the internal machinery to generate electricity. The more important criteria to take into consideration are the height of the rotors and the distance from any object that might interfere with the smooth flow of air or wind past and through your wind turbine.
Once the initial criteria have been met, and the location is deemed sufficient, the wind turbine can be erected. The next step in developing our alternative energy source is to transfer that electrical energy from the turbine to the tools, appliances and electronics that will utilize it.
Generally, extra electrical energy produced is stored in batteries positioned between the turbine and the home. This stored energy is then discharged into an inverter that will change the current from a constant one way flow, known as direct current or DC, to a rapidly reversing know as alternating current, or AC, that is used by our household appliances, tools and electronics.
The availability of sufficient wind is the only determining factor to consider if you are looking at developing renewable energy resources. Most often, especially in the inland areas with varied geography and topography, solar power systems are used to augment or compliment the wind turbine.
This combination is quickly becoming the preferred method of achieving energy independence, by providing reliable, continuous, renewable and affordable electricity to home owners.
Although often mistakenly called a windmill, wind power generators will be an invaluable tool in the development and refinement of our renewable energy resources. It will allow us to look confidently into the future and see clean energy and a clean environment without costing a fortune.
From Electrical to Mechanical?
I have this old clock, like the classic alarm clock with two bells on the top? I like building things and playing around with gears, so I was wondering if anyone else could help me turn this battery operated clock into a mechanical wind up one. I can buy the clock parts I need, but any suggestions as to where would also be nice.
Thanks!
The energy to move the hands of the clock is supplied by a battery in an electric clock vs. by a wound up spring in a mechanical clock. You can look for a old clock in a junk yard or a swap meet and figure out what kind of spring you need and how it is attached. May be the spring in the old clock will be still in good shape for you to try it out.

If a frozen flat isn’t enough to scare me from this winter riding adventure,
I’m also told that in extreme conditions my chain and gear head can freeze and
lock. I don’t even know what my gear head is!
